Student Loan Advising

Student Loan Advising is an introductory financial planning program that is designed specifically for early-career professionals in healthcare, law, and other public-interest careers.

STUDENT LOAN ADVISing

We believe that incorporating your student loans into a financial plan is the best place to start in helping you identify and prioritize your goals. This will also enhance your commitment to developing a comprehensive financial plan -one that is likely to make your goals more attainable.

The fact is financial goals for many young professionals are quite similar: identify an ideal student loan strategy, buy a first home, get married, start a family, pursue passions and leisure interests, and retire early or make your #sidehustle your main hustle.

But while your goals might be similar, your financial planning process must be personalized. Because things like income, marital status, risk tolerance, passions, financial commitments, and family structure are usually quite different.

How can you get from where you are today to where you want to be… next year, in five years, or in twenty?

Are you on the right track in getting your student loans forgiven? How will a potential wedding affect all of this?

We’ll answer all that and more on our call.

the value of financial planning

Simply put, we help you understand the net cost of the decisions you make (or don’t make) around your student loans.

Should you be on REPAYE or IBR? Do you have any chance at getting your loans forgiven through PSLF or an IDR plans?
We will crunch the numbers and answer all your questions in a face-to-face meeting via Zoom.

As you can see, the advice and analysis we offer can be worth tens of thousands of dollars.

How it works

Our process kicks off with a phone call or Zoom meeting. I am a virtual financial planner, so I can work with you regardless of your location. We have worked with clients in just about every state and international students that attended in the United States, but now live abroad.

From there, we will request a copy of your student loan data file directly from StudentAid.gov. Armed with this, our financial planning tools take that data and make it a little easier to read. As you can see below, we can pull a lot of data that your loan servicer doesn’t provide you.

We can see every single Federal student loan that was ever issued to you, when, and how much. A lot of federal programs are based on when you took out your student loans, so this is very helpful. Often, we find that our clients are overpaying on their loans.

We'll crunch the numbers...

We can see what your payment schedule should be and compare it against your actual bill. We can see interest accrual and interest capitalization, and whether there are better repayment options through your loan servicer. If it makes sense to perform loan consolidations or refinancing, we’ll let you know.

In the bottom right here, we can see that at the end of the client’s repayment plan, there’s still $169,355 balance. This might trigger a taxable event that we need to pay for down the road, or it could be forgiven through Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).

STRATEGY MEETING

We will review everything, and crunch the numbers. We’ll personally explain the pros and cons of various strategies, present key decision points, and answer all your questions in a Zoom meeting.
